What are PP labels?

Polypropylen

PP labels are labels made from polypropylene (PP), a highly durable plastic. They are characterized by their high resistance to moisture, chemicals and mechanical stress, making them ideal for demanding applications in industry, retail and the packaging sector.

Properties of polypropylene (PP)

Polypropylene is a thermoplastic polymer produced by the polymerization of propene - a gas derived from petroleum processing. As a thermoplastic, PP can be shaped under the influence of heat without changing its material structure.

With a market share of around 20% of global plastics production, PP is one of the most widely used plastics, especially in packaging. Its properties are similar to those of polyethylene (PE), but PP is harder, stronger and more heat-resistant.

Polypropylene granulate

Key material properties of PP film

  • Low weight: PP has the lowest density of all standard plastics (0.895–0.92 g/cm³).
  • High chemical resistance: Resistant to fats, acids, alkalis and many solvents.
  • Temperature resistance: Heat-resistant up to approx. 100 °C, but brittle at temperatures below 0 °C.
  • Mechanical stability: Harder and stiffer than PE, can be further adjusted using fillers (e.g. glass fibers).
  • Challenging to print on: Due to its low surface energy, special printing pre-treatment is necessary.
Waterproof labels

Material advantages of PP labels

PP is a preferred material for labels that need to be durable, waterproof and abrasion-resistant. The smooth surface of polypropylene enables high-quality printing, which is particularly suitable for packaging in industries such as food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

The key advantages of our PP labels:

  • Waterproof & weather-resistant – ideal for products exposed to moisture
  • Resistant to oils, greases & chemicals – perfect for cosmetics and industrial products
  • High dimensional stability & tear resistance – remains intact even under mechanical stress
  • UV and temperature resistant – long-lasting even when exposed to sunlight and heat
  • Glossy or matte finish – ideal for high-quality product packaging

Thanks to these advantages, our PP labels are the ideal choice for durable and hard-wearing labels

Where are PP labels used? - Overview of applications

Thanks to their excellent resistance to moisture, chemicals, heat and abrasion, PP labels are ideal for a wide range of industries and products. They can be found on numerous types of packaging, especially where durability and resistance are required. As many plastic packaging materials are also made from polypropylene, PP labels provide a material-matching and environmentally friendly recycling solution.

Food & Beverage

Labels must meet special requirements in the food and beverage industry: they need to be resistant to moisture and temperature fluctuations, stay firmly in place in refrigerated displays, and provide excellent print quality.

Advantages of PP labels for food & beverage products:

  • Water- and oil-resistant surface, ideal for chilled or frozen items
  • High adhesive strength on plastic, glass and metal packaging
  • Resistant to condensation and mechanical stress
  • High-quality printing for product information, barcodes and branding
  • Recycling benefit: labels can be recycled along with PP packaging
Food labels

PP labels are ideal for bottles, cans, yogurt pots and frozen products. They ensure long-lasting, hygienic and attractive product labeling.

Cosmetic labels

Cosmetics & body care

Cosmetic labels must not only be aesthetically pleasing, but also resistant to moisture, oils and mechanical stress. High-quality labelling solutions are essential for products like shampoos, lotions or perfumes.

Advantages of PP labels for cosmetic products:

  • High resistance to moisture, creams, oils and perfume
  • Scratch-resistant and abrasion-resistant surface for a long-lasting premium look
  • Luxurious finishing options with lacquers, laminates or metallic effects
  • Standard-compliant labelling: ingredients according to INCI, best-before date, tamper-evident

Thanks to their scratch and moisture-resistant surface, PP labels are perfect for cosmetic products that are frequently exposed to water and oil-based substances.

Pharmaceuticals & chemicals

Reliable labelling and resistance to aggressive substances are top priorities in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries. PP labels are particularly in demand here, as they can withstand even extreme conditions.

Advantages of PP labels for pharmaceuticals & chemicals:

  • Chemical resistance: Resistant to acids, alkalis and aggressive liquids
  • High adhesive strength on plastic and glass containers (also for round containers & squeeze bottles)
  • UV and temperature resistant - ideal for indoor and outdoor applications
  • Clearly legible printing for barcodes, security features & legal information Material stability for RFID and serialisation labels
Pharma labels

PP labels ensure durable and tamper-proof labelling of medicines, disinfectants, hazardous substances and laboratory chemicals.

Industry

Industry & logistics

In logistics, mechanical engineering or the automotive industry, labels must withstand extreme conditions such as heat, abrasion, moisture or heavy mechanical loads. PP labels offer a durable solution here.

Advantages of PP labels for industry & logistics:

  • High tear resistance and resistance to mechanical stress
  • Weather resistance for use in harsh environments
  • Stable adhesion to plastic, metal and packaging materials
  • Resistant to oils, lubricants and industrial cleaning agents
  • Perfect for barcode labels, inventory labelling and security labels

PP labels are used in industry for machine labelling, shipping labels, product signs and component labels that need to remain legible and resistant over long periods of time.

PP vs PE labels - which plastic labels are better?

When choosing the right labelling material, many companies are faced with the decision: polypropylene (PP) or polyethylene (PE)? Both plastics have their strengths, but differ in important properties such as flexibility, durability and areas of application.

Property PP Labels (Polypropylene) PE-Etiketten (Polyethylen)
Flexibility Rigid and dimensionally stable Very flexible – ideal for soft packaging
Tear resistance High tear and abrasion resistance Less tear-resistant than PP
Chemical resistance Resistant to oils, greases, acids and alkalis Also resistant, but slightly less durable than PP
Water & moisture resistance Highly water-resistant and durable Water-resistant, but softer and less dimensionally stable
Heat resistance Heat-resistant up to approx. 100 °C Less heat-resistant than PP
Print quality High colour brilliance and sharpness Good print quality, but less glossy than PP
Typical applications Cosmetics, food, chemicals, industry Flexible packaging, soft surfaces, film-based products

When are PP labels the better choice?

PP labels are the ideal choice for products that require high dimensional stability, durability and an elegant appearance. They are the preferred labelling solution, particularly in sectors such as cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and industry

PP labels are particularly suitable for:

  • Cosmetic products (e.g. shampoos, creams, lotions) → Oil and water-resistant labels
