Metallicised labels or metal labels are labels made of plastic foil or label paper that have been coated with a very thin metal layer (usually aluminium) on the surface by a high-vacuum procedure. Despite their metal layer, metallicised labels are easily deformable and adapt to uneven surfaces without crumpling.

What are metallicised labels?

Metallicised labels are the grafters among labels! They have to be tough on the job, because they usually perform their marking function under particularly difficult conditions in industry or outdoors. But what makes them so valuable?

Metallicised labels or metal labels are labels made of plastic foil or label paper that have been coated with a very thin metal layer (usually aluminium) on the surface by a high-vacuum procedure. This means that the very thin metal layer enables makes them impermeable to water, grease, oil, chemicals, fuels, solvents and water vapour. But that's not all: the metal surface reflects light, heat, UV radiation, and is abrasion-resistant.

But not only their inner values are tough: metallicised labels are given a metallic sheen by being coated with pure aluminium, giving them a particularly popular optical effect. The metallic surface can be printed digitally, conventionally or with a laser printer and then varnished.

The advantages of metallicised labels:
  • Decorative glossy surface
  • Good formability
  • Barrier properties
  • Take well to printing and coating
  • Good durability
  • Suitable for outdoor applications
  • Printable with any roller printer

The "metal" effect

Metallicised labels have a metallic shine and thus achieve a special optical effect - the "metal effect". This effect is available in a multitude of optical variants: e.g. in aluminium, silver, gold, copper; even holograms are possible. Metallicised labels therefore offer the ideal opportunity to combine protection and barrier functions with an attractive appearance. A metallic glossy label can be used, for example, to allow it to appear higher quality or to replace an expensive metal or plastic nameplate with a cheaper metal label made of paper or foil. Not to mention the fact that the information must be embossed on a metal nameplate, while a metallicised label can be printed on any handy roll label printer.

But why do we humans love the metal effect?

Brain researchers have discovered that the sight of metal is associated with positive emotions, especially for men. Metal represents material prosperity (wealth), success, strength, and security. These emotions are, of course, specifically exploited in marketing. Vehicles with metallic paintwork, Apple notebooks with aluminium bodies, and gold jewellery sell better because they are considered to be of particularly high quality.

  1. Metallicised labels in advertising

The "metal effect" described above is also used to refine food with a high-quality design for advertising reasons. Metallicised wet glue labels are a typical example of this. Many types of beer are labelled with metallicised wet glue labels in order to enhance the image of the respective beer brand and thus convince consumers to buy the brand. In addition to taste and price, the design as an image carrier is one of the most important sales arguments. The appeal to the eye is almost as important as the taste.

Even when it comes to simple embellishment, labels with a metallic effect are ideally suited. From the invitation to the company party to the golden wedding, from the whiself-adhesiveey box to the give-away: Labels in silver and labels in gold are eye-catching, noble and exclusive.
